Consuming coffee has become popular in spaces of great luminosity, seeking a homogeneous conception of space where everything has to shine, be exposed, typical of an increasingly prevailing trend, without trying to understand or incorporate other aspects of materiality in between, both in the space as in the objects related.
Acid Café is located in a dark ground floor facing the street of an old building of the nineteenth century as much of the “Barrio de las Letras” buildings of Madrid, which is now recovering a certain local commercial activity driven by a tourism infrastructure and the popularity of the best art museums nearby. Acid tries to offer coffee but from a specialized perspective, in a country like Spain where it has been continuously mistreated.
To integrate the careful selection that Acid proposes through Danish toasters with the will to maintain and retain the essence of natural aromas and flavors, the furniture has been conceived in tinted wood. This tries to remember the tropical woods that are born from the same latitudes where coffee grows, trying to follow clean and simple lines that resemble contemporary and modern references, just like Acid Cafe tries to do in its proposal. All the furniture has been entirely handcrafted by KAL A’s workshop, from sanding and varnishing, to assembly and leveling, trying to create a custom design that provides dynamism and functional capacity when serving to the client.
Each piece of furniture comes from the maximum profitability of the minimum pieces of wood trying to offer an austere design, which tries to move away from the cafeteria concept that franchises have created; the bookstore or workspace.
Within the food processing industry, stainless steel has become the ideal material to maintain cleanliness in the different processes, so when thinking about lightning, different designs have been chosen trying to unite and strengthen the relationship between design and industrial appearance. Handles, tables, and other utensils of iron, brass or steel itself evoke this world encompassed by metal.
The existing refurbishment walls were unfinished and left in a untreatable condition. The maintenance of its various inaccuracies dialogues with the austerity associated with a space of infused beverages, and the resonance of those storage spaces close to agriculture.
All this, independently of the design itself, forms an atmosphere that moves continuously between traditional values and the present.
