Sequenced space
The aim of the project was to divide a large apartment into two different units, without removing any used space from the original structure. From a first study, it became evident as the living room– a part of the property, which had been the place of social gathering up to the seventies, had undergone various changes over the years – was now clearly underutilized.
The project mixes Mediterranean forms with a Scandinavian taste because of the owners’ different nationalities. We searched for a free plan solution with a gradual transition from public to private, suggested by the different volumes dividing environment into primary and secondary spaces, marked by the structural elements of the building. The rib with cane stalks reminds of the traditional ceilings’ structures and virtually divides the living room. The plywood corridor, treated with coffee to obtain the specific coloration, breaks the space and hides the entrance to the Tadelakt bathroom. Finally, the bedroom takes full advantage of the height of the room, where the wardrobe is located under the bed. The materials are mostly natural, poor and traditional. They have been reinterpreted in a modern way and combined with modern design and Sicilian antiques.
