Casera Gianin
A hut at the feet of Mount Pelmo
Casèra Gianin is set on the mountainside at an altitude of 1650 metres. The small typical stone construction, measuring an area of fifty squared metres on two levels, was originally used as a shelter for tools, cattle and shepherds. The masonry wall set against the mountain was for a long time stressed by the load resting on it and by the water pressure that moistened the earth floor.
The client wants to maintain the exterior and to use the space as a bivouac. The reinforcement works have mainly affected the masonry elements which were provided with concrete foundations, and the retaining walls protected through the excavation of a drainage trench. The gravel subfloor hosts additional drains that evacuate any possible seepage. The concrete ground beams and slabs construct the new flooring level and act as counterforts, implementing the stability of the stone walls. The upper floor rockwool insulation is covered by a larch cladding. The roof is built with the traditional larch shingles technique.
