Experiencing the city
The Cord is a metal pipe at the entrance of the 50th Venice Art Biennale.
It acts as the umbilical cord to enter the exhibition, encouraging the experience of passing inside a Corten steel-made cylinder.
A multiple series of Cords is installed at the entrance of the Giardini, covered with a roof made of the same material. Some of them house the new ticket offices.
The same object was placed in fifteen squares of Italian cities, building a ‘net of experiences’. As interference inside some consolidated public spaces, the Cord intercepts the main paths, as a provokation within the traditional way of understanding and experiencing each specific place. In some cases they frame special buildings but, without any didactic purpose, they can be activated by people in many different ways: skating, relaxing, playing, amplifying sounds...
These pieces also contain and metaphorically transport information about the Biennale, inverting the conventional flow which usually brings information to the people through IT, by inviting everybody to make a space experience to get information about the Venice Biennale.
The Cord is a Corten steel cilinder, 200 metres long and built with modular elements. Each module is 1,25 meters long with a 3 meters diameter. The minimal dimension is made of six modules.
