Hugo-Junkers Park
Recognize the usefulness of what is not.
True to this motto, a new opening that provides a sense of vastness in the middle of the
dense surrounding buildings forms the centre of the Hugo-Junkers Park. In order to enhance
the contrast between the wide open meadows and the context, the location is strongly
framed on the western side by a strict line of trees (Fraxinus angustifolia 'Raywood') and on
the eastern side; as well as southern, by a green border on which existing vegetation and
additional trees are to be placed. The northern edge is constituted by the “Pahlkebad”
swimming hall whose side facing the park is kept free of vegetation to provide an extensive
visual link to the architectural quality of the building. The green frame responds to the
inhomogeneous environment boundaries and creates a consistent and clearly legible open
space. This simple gesture builds a place with many qualities that can fulfil the new concerns
of different residents. The open space is best to be used as a lawn for sunbathing as well as
a place for sport and recreational activities of any kind, whilst the border shaded areas act as
retreat zone which at the same time allow a view into the activity happening inside the park.
In addition, two playgrounds and a "Dog Forest" are arranged on the frame area as focus
and precise action points. The simple and robust sitting places are to be made out of the
wood from the existing Giant tingle tree and with this action, the park keeps something of
such element.
The general concept offers a strong frame in which no further constructions are necessary.
The "non-available" is a unique feature of the park which creates a spatial setting for a self-
determined appropriation of the place by future users.
The Villa in the Park
The House of St. Stephanus located on the Hugo-Junkers Park is strongly surrounded by
vegetation that requires a highly selective review. In opposition to the clear and light middle
of the park, the fundamental character and very romantic image of the trees around the Villa
in the Park should be maintained. However, this requires a strong thinning of the existing tree
situation.
To achieve this, part of the scrubs, low-growing shrubs and all occurring conifers
should be removed from the immediate area and trees with a clear crown, which provide
differentiated light and shadow spots that prevent insecurity, should be a supplement.
The active usable opening of the Hugo-Junkers-Park is to be confronted as a rediscovered
atmospheric place with a different pace that offers a room for retreat and contemplation.
