Divisare - Projects Divisare - Projects Mutable parking of «La Plaine Images» - deAlzua+, EKOA
Situated in the heart of the urban project «La Plaine Images», in a trapezoidal plot of 5.1 hectare in complete mutation, the silo-shaped car park sits on a median position. Its North/South orientation puts it in the extension of the Séchoir building, perpendicular to Boulevard Descat and the Grands Magasins building situated on Boulevard d’Armentières.

© Sergio Grazia. It is located at the junction of different flows (bikes, cars and pedestrians) between the town and the activities island. The functional and urban impacts are so important that its vocation has been enlarged to become a real “lodge of the block”.

© Sergio Grazia. At ‘the beginning of the universe’, light, time, space and matter were all undifferentiated and everything was just ‘one’. I imagined there might have been a moment when it would have been possible to presage the beginning of the ‘universe’. The state right after the ‘beginning of the universe’ means that light, time, space and matter just started to have their own behaviours. We tried to recreate that action, the direction that the universe and time would take as ‘Expansion Time’, CITIZEN’s new installation. Since this project started, we researched about ‘time’ further, more deeply. We think we know about ‘time’ however we realise that we only know little about it and the biggest discovery was that the universe never stops; in this lies the mystery and the potential of ‘time’ to us. ‘Expansion Time’ is an installation which projects the time that may expand or get distorted. The movement of light and shadow between 10,000 main-plates and the blank space that surrounds them creates a ‘time experience’ that is still unknown to humankind. A gallery space to experience one of CITIZEN’s technologies, ‘Super Titanium’, was also created; it is an exhibition to show the distinctive texture and strength of titanium alloy made from CITIZEN’s state-of-the-art processing technology, and also the history and potential of ‘Super Titanium’, a material created from CITIZEN’s pioneering experiments. After ‘Frozen Time’ in 2013 and ‘Compressed Time’ in 2014, ‘Expansion Time’ was born in 2015 to create an emotional experience to show the visitors the as-yet-unknown potential of time.

Photo by Takuji Shimmura © DGT (DORELL.GHOTMEH.TANE / ARCHITECTS). Here, however, the volume derives its shape from a quite modern technology: that of the high-speed (TGV) train, as the station measures 385m in length, or the length of such a train’s configuration. At its widest, the station measures 33 m. The gallery is made-up of glazed panels with integrated solar cells (spanning a surface area of 15,000 m2) which aim to produce 680,000 kWh/yr.

© Julien Lanoo . It occupies and takes over what is already there. Building is destroying. Despite Heidegger’s definition, where space and therefore architecture is defined as the art of “spacing”, liberating, it seems that architects have primarily been concentrated on the opposite activity. We have focused our work on enclosures, throwing hermetic objects into the city fabric.

© BUREAU A . In 1907, he opened a zoo in Stellingen, near Hamburg, based on the principles he had developed: a naturalistic milieu where barriers had been made invisible and animals could be seen in a reenacted natural environment. Living creatures were observed by the visitors in a panoptical display replicating their natural habitat. This new model remained an important reference and is nowadays the most common in zoos around the world. The fate of many animal species, being a mere entertainment for mankind while avoiding any contact, was influenced by this model.

© BUREAU A . The surroundings are dominated with usual „Polish cubes” from the sixties and old wooden barns.

© olo studio. The house took the form of a cuboid in which parts of the exterior walls are movable. When the house opens up to the garden, eastern and western side walls move towards the exterior fence creating a courtyard. After crossing the gate one has to wait in this safety zone before being let inside the house. In the same time, there is no risk of children escaping to the street area in an uncontrolled way while playing in the garden.

© olo studio. Consequently, when the house is closed (at night for example) the safe zone is limited to the house’s outline. In the daytime, as a result of the walls opening, it extends to the garden surrounding the house.

© olo studio. That is why this patent can be applied to both modern and traditional, single- and multi – storeyed houses covered with roofs of different geometry. This universal solution we came up with gives a new type of building where not the form but the way of functioning is the most important. The name: „safe house” gains a new meaning now.

© olo studio. Published on June 26, 2015.

Mechanic…
Accomplishment of this idea required the use of technically complex solutions. The most significant are the sliding walls (both 2,2 m high, 22 and 15 m long), which allow to interfere with the urban structure and determine the safe zone of the plot. They are not the only mobile elements of the building. Apart from these, there are large shutters (all 2,8 m high, with a width ranging up to 3,5 m, opening up to 180 degrees) and a drawbridge leading to the roof terrace above the swimming pool. The southern elevation is closed by an enormous roll-down gate of 14 and 6 m manufactured by a company normally supplying shipyards and air companies. It is made with white anodized aluminum which makes it possible to function as a movie projection screen. All the movable elements are based on built-in electronic engines, that guarantee safe operation. The whole building is a concrete monolith, while it’s mobile parts – for the sake of considerable size – are light steel trusses filled with mineral wool. As a result, the building is perfectly insulated when closed. The whole house as well as the mobile elements are clad with cement-bonded particleboards – Cetris and waterproof alder plywood fixed to a steel construction and painted with dark wood stain, which resembles the wood widely found on the surrounding houses and barns, and makes it fit well into the rural landscape.

© olo studio. Published on June 26, 2015.

...to Organic
Once the house opens, it’s bright and spacious interior merges extensively with the garden. Wide glazings behind the movable walls let the building acquire energy during the day (winter) or prevent the sun’s heat from going into the house (summer). At night, when the house is closed, the thick outer layer helps the building to accumulate the gained energy. Such a solution together with the hybrid heat system (most of the energy is gained from renewable sources – heat pump and solar systems supported with gas heating) and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery makes the house become an intelligent passive building. Every day the house acts in a similar way – it wakes up every morning to close up after the dusk. This routine reminds of the processes occurring in nature – the house resembles a plant in its day and night cycle.

© olo studio. The multi-activities indoor hall is revealed by an imbrication of volumes. Each volume represents a specific function : the first one, on the entrance square, hosts the gymnastic room, overhung by a second volume occupied by the dance hall. The third volume, opened on the other side of the city, shows the most impressive part of the program : the multisport hall. This strong volumetric expression is sublimated by a subtle treatment of the facades. The facades highlight the volumes. Each aims to express their own identity by the way the materials are implemented.

© Sergio Grazia. From the outside, this opalescent glass reveals the life inside the room. Its six facilities accommodating, among other things, modern laboratories and multimedia exhibitions were designed by the Warsaw based architectural studio Nizio Design International. Zoom Natury has been built on a site measuring more than 10 hectares on the banks of a bay located in Janów Lubelski in the Lublin province. The official opening of the facility to visitors took place on June 12th, 2015.

© Nizio Design International . By moving and playing with the elements of the fan, Archimedes machine, spring-loaded machinery or the compressor, visitors learn how kinetic energy is converted into sound or electricity. This is a characteristic building looming out of the landscape with total area of 407.16 square metres, whose walls give the impression of rising from out of the ground. It features a design that allows its elevation to completely ‘fuse’ with the surrounding greenery, thanks to the creepers that cover it. The roof of the building has been put to use as a lookout point and a resting place thanks to wooden elements of small architecture and the low growing vegetation embedded in its structure. The owner is an art collector so the tunnel is also used as a gallery of his paintings collection.

© Juliusz Sokołowski . The result: an under-utilized roof space gave way to an angular crown, connected to a ground floor reception space and architectural office by the host’s renovated spine. Having already made their mark on nearby Residence Königswarte with the addition of the Strata Hotel in 2007, Plasma Studio sought to follow a similar skin organization. A timber strip section in larch wood was borrowed from the neighbouring Strata and extruded along two paths. The first stretches across the site, picking up the topography on either end of the building and climbing to enclose a third storey balcony. Here, the edge skirts around the existing footprint, leaving corners exposed to acknowledge its presence. A second path draws the timber skin up from behind, folding around the chimney to return to the ground. Interstitial spaces between the exterior walls and wooden bands swell at ground level to offer sheltered outdoor living spaces. The design team employed parametric modelling software to optimize the density of these timber strips and their metal substrustructure, balancing budget, aesthetics, privacy and views. This approach allowed for flexibility throughout the design phase and output shop drawings for pre-fabricated elements at an efficient pace. The Alma addition departs, however, from the Strata in its approach to volume. The practical constraints of a multiroom hotel structure called for a regular distribution of modules along a connecting spine. The perceived volume was achieved through horizontal sections around free-flowing terrace spaces. With the Alma, we took advantage of a more flexible program to create unique spatial conditions. These interior volumes are rendered legible from the exterior by the timber strips an honest depiction of the playful activity within. The interior of this family home is characterized by 360-degree views. Perhaps the most spectacular of these being a view of the sky through an incision over the central stair. This opening delivers an immediate reading of exterior weather conditions, collecting precipitation and receiving direct sunlight. The main living spaces are split over two floors with first floor bedrooms off a skylit corridor, and an open plan kitchen, dining and family room encircling a fireplace on the second floor. By grouping functional elements in orthogonal cores, the surrounding space is liberated. The exterior walls of the main living spaces collapse inwards to catch light, views and varying degrees of enclosure. All living spaces in the private residence have direct access to the outside through a series terraces or gardens. Its multiple access points include: a main entrance through an internal connection to the neighbouring house, a series of openings that follow the natural topography, and an external stair connecting the third floor terrace to the garden. Each inhabitant has come to find their own favourite route. Limited material and colour palettes give strength to the space, with splashes of colour in the children’s washroom. The otherwise white walls provide a backdrop for an ever-changing display of shadows from the pleated roof above. As the extension sits within the steep topography, substructural elements were developed in reinforced concrete, while the superstructure was built from prefabricated cross laminated timber (CLT) insulated with wood fiber and sealed with black bitumen. The outer skin in larch wood strips on a galvanized steel structure was determined according to cost and aesthetics by the aforementioned parametric model. A consistently limited colour code was applied to the exterior, allowing the volume to dissolve into the surrounding hillside when viewed from afar. Through its use of form, materials and views, this newly completed addition flirts with its context at three scales. The first, and most immediate, with its host: as an addition to the Alma residence, it shares a newly renovated core, carrying the fractal geometry from the roof down to Plasma’s Italian office through the Alma’s cartesian skeleton. The second, with its neighbour: together the Strata and the Alma define the next generation of the family-owned hotel complex. And finally, with its terrain: the sculptural addition acts, not as a parasite, but as a mediator between the existing house and surrounding topography, extending from the landscape like a lichen.

© Plasma Studio .

© Matteo Piazza. After the smoke, black earthen debris began showering down over the villages and cities within the immediate vicinity of the mountain. From the highway through to the Greek theatre in Taormina, everything was covered with black. The establishment was to become a medium, a link, between the hydrocarbons-producing company and the rest of the world: a representative place which was going to express the ideas of progress and modernity that were Eni’s signature in the 50s. Mattei identifies in Gellner the most suitably personality to give voice to these planning requirements.

by Giacomo De Donà, courtesy of Progettoborca. Gellner not only worked out the typological and structural solutions of the houses, but also examined in depth the planning of the interiors, of the movable and unmovable furniture: pieces made serially, sturdy and easy to maintain.

© Sergio Casagrande . To avoid defacement of the landscape and to gain an optimal view of Mount Pelmo, Gellner managed to obtain from Mattei permission to bury all wiring. The cottages seem to be built on piles, with load-bearing partition walls made of decorated cement embedded to the ground, prebuilt elements which support the mono-pitched roof and the large horizontal glass walls which guarantee ample brightness inside. The result is a constellation of small, low, elongated houses perfectly in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

by Aldo Ballo, courtesy of Archivio storico Eni Roma.

ABOUT PROGETTOBORCA Progettoborca is a project of cultural enhancement and functional rethinking of the former Eni Village of Borca di Cadore, launched in July 2014 by Dolomiti Contemporanee.

Dolomiti Contemporanee (DC) is a project born in 2011 in the Dolomiti-UNESCO area. DC, visual arts lab on location, is a contemporary art and cultural innovation “construction site” project. DC works for the re-activation of abandoned sites, industrial archaeology compounds, factories that have been shut down, in the Dolomiti-UNESCO region. These underutilized resources, which politics, governments, and economy have been unable to rehabilitate in conventional ways for years, decades, become the construction sites of a regenerative, re-functionalizing project based on culture and art, strategies and networks.

The sites in which DC operates are selected on the basis of their quality, that is to say on the formal values of architecture, on their logistical, functional capabilities, and on the relationship with the environmental context: they’re all sites with exceptional qualities, charged with atmosphere and attraction: the one we intend to bring back to light.

Re-imagining them, however, isn’t enough to turn them back on; to obtain that result, DC continuously works on the enlargement of the strategic platforms of support to the project. There are more than one hundred partners to date. They belong to various and different categories: institutional partners, public ones, private, productive, not to mention the cultural and artistic ones, several of them national and international in their reach.

Progettoborca stands to give new cultural value and offer a functional re-thinking of a site with an exceptional cultural and historical value: the Former Eni Village of Borca di Cadore, built in the tail end of the 50s by Enrico Mattei, as a vacation centre for Eni employees. A pioneering and unique business welfare experiment, in Italy, and absolutely innovative cultural workshop at the time. It’s an exceptional and unique site, both from an architectural standpoint, in its relationship with the landscape, and in the vastness of the platform (big businesses, like Pirelli, Fantorni, Lanerossi, Krupp, Richard Ginori, work together to build it, realising parts for the site).

Since July 2014, DC has, indeed, started up an international artist residency inside the Village, with studios and ateliers, and the great, magnificent spaces by Gellner, drowned in the Dolomitic woods, have been transformed in a creative and artistic lab. Together with the current owner of the site (Minoter-Cualbu Group), and a network of territorial subjects that gets bigger and bigger each day, a decisive action of enhancement and possible redefinition of this site and its connected parts (Colonia) today, was undertaken.

Progettoborca doesn’t intend to stand as the umpteenth evaluation (representation) of this site: we don’t want to go back to watch it but, finally, to begin an active process on it, working from the inside, culturally and strategically, imagining concrete and innovative reactivation models for it, a series of functions, a destiny that is, once more, active.

The regenerative construction site will continue throughout the next three years. It integrates, as is the way in DC, the creative functions (art and culture) with the strategic ones, and with the ones linked to the handling and re-evaluation policy of the asset.

Periodically DC opens up the site with guided tours and open studios which enable visitors to get to know the Village and Progettoborca from the inside. These are the artists who, to this day, have worked in Progettoborca: Marco Andrighetto, Marta Allegri, Chiara Bergamo, Elisa Bertaglia, Gino Blanc, Stefano Cagol, Fabiano De Martin Topranin, Gianni De Val, Sandra Hauser, Jérémy Laffon, Stefano Moras, Luka Sirok.

Info on all the activities of Progettoborca can be found on the website www.progettoborca.net .
Wed, 24 Jun 2015 15:46:15 +0200 http://divisare.com/projects/292212-Studio-Gellner-Le-Villette-del-Villaggio-Eni-di-Borca-di-Cadore- http://divisare.com/projects/292212-Studio-Gellner-Le-Villette-del-Villaggio-Eni-di-Borca-di-Cadore- Ekklesia - miguel arraiz garcia
It is an installation made with cardboard tubes with a metallic appearance atop a mosaic made of 96,000 wooden pieces.

Photo by Noel Arraiz. © Noel Arraiz. Ostrakon (plural, ostraka), literally piece of vessel, is the Greek term that has come down to us as the famous exile by ostracism, and it was nothing but a law allowing citizens to banish for some time political or other harmful citizens for Polis. Over the potsherds the citizens had to write the name of the politician who was a potential danger to the community. In the Athens of the V century B.C. was an important political institution, safeguarding its democratic system of government from internal enemies. To apply law of ostracism the Ekklesia gathered once a year debating whether there was sufficient evidences to implement the ostracism, if that was the case the ostrakophoria was called , assembly where ostracism was voted. Such voting was held in the agora, with about 6,000 citizens entitled to vote. And the vote consisted in writing down on the piece of ceramic uóstrakon the name of the person that everyone thought it should be ostracized. Once the votes were counted the one with most votes was banished from Athens for 10 years, the exile was granted 10 days to prepare his departure from the Polis. The Athenian ostracism was a preventive law, which anticipated future conspiracies to establish tyranny.”

Photo by Noel Arraiz. © Noel Arraiz.
