A new center and public meeting point for a mountain village in the Tyrolean Alps was recently opened: Schulzentrum Zell am Ziller. The center was born out of a well-crafted expansion and renovation of the existing school building, originally built in 1968 near the Ziller River. The new building was placed in front of the existing school turning the orientation of the new complex towards the center of the village. Its new location offers an attractive space and opportunities for student gatherings in addition to community meetings and events. The school extension is now home to a middle school focusing on music education, as well as the music school for the Ziller Valley and different social clubs. The building is a Nearly Zero Energy Building according to the EU energy guidelines for 2020.
Views and outlooks
The new building comes to life through an inviting entrance hall that opens up to a large foyer and the specially lowered gym blending harmoniously with the renovated and new building. Lowering some areas reduces the size of the structure visible from the outside. The sports facilities especially the gym offers generous views and outlooks of the green surrounding space and while acting as a natural orientation within the school building. Various vertical and horizontal crevices allow for a constant flow of natural light, provide transparency and an open relationship with the natural surroundings, all the way to the new big terrace on the second floor.
Combining new and existing
The outer and inner paths or corridors of the existing building find a logical continuation, thus creating a very open and transparent space. The new foyer with its spacious lobby now offers a central wardrobe. The large panoramic terrace on the 2nd floor creates an unusual location during breaks and extra space for events on the roof. The auditorium, the spacious foyer and the permeability of the semi-public areas around the school create additional “social value” for the village. The interior spaces are as transparent as possible in various dimensions and generously designed. The result is an attractive place that offers plenty of room for creativity.
Glass, wood and concrete
The large spaces especially the gym were constructed by using pre-stressed reinforced concrete slabs, together with a minimal light support structure, which enabled an economic structural solution and simultaneously allowed the transparent interiors. The dominating building materials for the exterior are glass, fiberglass re-inforced concrete facades panels and concrete on the roof terrace. The extensive green areas, mostly moss plants, are a visual highlight and have a positive impact on the indoor environment. The interior is dominated by the use of glass, wood and concrete. The architects gave the greatest possible consideration for sustainability and longevity of building materials.

Zentrum in Zell am Ziller: Schule, Musik und mehr
Ein Zentrum für Menschen und neuer Mittelpunkt des öffentlichen Lebens steht seit kurzem in Tirol: das Schulzentrum Zell am Ziller. Das 1968 gebaute Schulgebäude nahe dem Zillerfluss erstrahlt nun erweitert und renoviert in neuem Glanz. Jetzt bietet dieser attraktive Ort viel Platz und Möglichkeiten für SchülerInnen, Veranstaltungen und Treffen. Der bestehenden Schule vorgelagert wendet sich das neue Gebäude dem Ort zu und beherbergt eine Mittelschule mit Musikschwerpunkt, eine Landesmusikschule Zillertal und unterschiedliche Vereine.
Ein- und Durchblicke
Besonders lebendig wirkt das Gebäude durch den einladenden Eingangsbereich mit großem Foyer und dem speziell abgesenkten Turnsaal, die sich beide harmonisch in den renovierten Haupttrakt einfügen. Die Absenkung einiger Bereiche reduziert die von außen sichtbare Größe des Bauwerks. Der Sportbereich bietet durch seine großzügigen Ein- und Durchblicke auf die umliegenden Räumlichkeiten Orientierung im Haus. Die offenen vertikale und horizontale natürliche Lichtführungen schafft Transparenz Naturbezug bis hin zur neuen großen Pausenterrasse im zweiten Stock.
Neues mit Bestehendem verbunden
Die äußeren und inneren Wege vom Bestehenden ins Neue finden eine logische Fortsetzung und so entstand ein sehr offenes und transparentes Zentrum. Das neue Foyer mit seinem großzügigen Eingangsbereich bietet nun auch Platz für eine Zentralgarderobe. Mit der großen Panorama-Terrasse im 2. Stock gelang ein ungewöhnlicher Freiklassenbereich und auch noch zusätzlicher Raum für Veranstaltungen auf dem Dach. Die Aula, die großzügigen Foyers und die Durchlässigkeit der halböffentlichen Bereiche zum Ort hin schaffen sozialen Mehrwert. Auch die anderen Innenräume sind in allen Dimensionen möglichst transparent und großzügig gestaltet. So entstand ein attraktiver Ort, der viel Raum für Kreativität bietet.
Glas, Holz und Beton
In leistungsfähiger Massivbauweise wurden weitgespannte und teilweise vorgespannte Stahlbetondecken gebaut, die gemeinsam mit einer minimierten Tragkonstruktion eine wirtschaftliche Errichtung ermöglichten und gleichzeitig die transparenten Innenräume zuließen. Bei den Baustoffen dominieren im Außenbereich Glas, Glasfaserbeton-Fassaden und Betonstein bei der Terrasse. Eine extensive Begrünung, hauptsächlich durch Moospflanzen, stellt einerseits ein optisches Highlight dar und wirkt sich andererseits positiv auf das Raumklima aus. Der Innenbereich lebt stark durch die Materialien Glas, Holz und Beton. Größtmögliche Berücksichtigung schenkten die Planer beim Einsatz der Materialien der Nachhaltigkeit und der Langlebigkeit.
