For this public tendering process, announced by the Junta de Andalucía (Andalusian regional government) we used the experience gained both in Erfurt (Germany) and in Málaga. We obtained the first price. After four years of meetings, changes of plans, etc. the execution project was finally formalized. Fortunately, the spirit of the project was preserved and, therefore, the main ideas of the contest’s preliminary project were maintained. As a result, the building was the original one from the point of view of architecture and town planning.
In questo Concorso di livello nazionale, organizzato dalla Junta de Andalucía, avvalendosi delle esperienze acquisite sia ad Erfurt (Germania) che a Malaga, abbiamo ottenuto il primo premio. Dopo quattro anni di incontri, cambi di programma, ecc., siamo giunti ad un progetto esecutivo. Fortunatamente è stato rispettato lo spirito iniziale del progetto al fine di mantenerne i temi fondamentali presentati nella fase preliminare del Concorso, arrivando nel complesso ad un edificio simile dal punto di vista urbanistico e architettonico.
The objectives were clear:
We wanted to achieve a pleasant court building surrounded by gardens, where the public perceives that here there is not only judgement but also defence. They should find themselves in a space that allows one to find the spiritual rest that is necessary to be able to face up to the challenging tasks of judging and being judged.
Gli obiettivi erano chiari: Si voleva ottenere un Palazzo di Giustizia, circoscritto da giardini, intimo, dove il pubblico pensi che in questo luogo non soltanto si giudica ma anche si difende; e pure ritrovarsi in spazi che diano la sensazione di un riposo spirituale, imprescindibile tanto per l’imputato come per il giudice.
We wanted to design an introverted architecture that looks upon itself and mistrusts exhibitionism. The work is not based on the measures of what is built but rather on the richness of space, with an interior avenue, a garden and soft light. It works with the surprise of the show that commences when the curtain rises to make visible the halls, the patios, the footbridges, limitless walls and changes in the scales of volumes of what present themselves as domestic and familiar buildings.
Si cerca di progettare un'architettura introspettiva che guarda a se stessa e diffida dall'esibizionismo. Non si lavora con le misure del costruito, ma con la ricchezza spaziale, l'atmosfera dei percorsi interni, il giardino e la luce contenuta. Vi è una sorpresa continua, come se si trattasse di uno spettacolo, il quale ha inizio quando è aperto il sipario dei vari corridoi, cortili, passaggi pedonali o pareti ininterrotte insieme ai cambi di scala dei volumi, che appaiono come edifici domestici e familiari.
In Almería one can feel the presence of Arab architecture, dumb and blind to the exterior yet open, fresh and transparent to the inside. The rest was just developing the normal programme for court buildings: respect the radical division between the private and the public, design big public spaces opposite the gardens and create a hierarchy of different spaces avoiding inconvenient interferences.
In Almeria è forte la presenza dell’architettura araba, muta e cieca all'esterno, aperta con elevate capacità di controllo climatico nonché trasparente all'interno. Di seguito si è sviluppato un programma per il Palazzo di Giustizia: rispettare radicalmente la separazione tra pubblico e privato; ottenere grandi spazi pubblici nei giardini anteriori; e organizzare i distinti ambiti in modo gerarchico senza inopportune interferenze.
The plot is at the crossing of two crearly differentiated roads, the Carretera de Ronda, sloping down towards the port, with heavy traffic and big blocks of flats, and the street calle Padre Méndez, bordered by school buildings, a music school and small green areas. The main objective is to create an open architecture that, besides constituting a single building, can be divided and organized by importance making the complexity of the programme clear.
Il lotto è situato all'intersezione di due percorsi chiaramente distinti, la strada statale Ronda, in pendenza verso l'area portuale, con un traffico intenso e grandi blocchi di abitazioni, e la Via Padre Mendez, delimitata da edifici scolastici, il Conservatorio di Musica e piccoli parchi di quartiere. L'obiettivo principale è di creare un'architettura aperta che, invece di essere un edificio isolato, fosse divisa e classificata secondo le priorità, chiarificando la complessità del programma.
Two buildings are separated through an open gardened avenue. An entrance block and a building housing the court and the visitors’ rooms. It’s an architecture that looks to its inside, avoiding the gaze to fall on the blocks of flats on the carretera de Ronda.
The arrangement takes advantage of the difference in elevation (3 m) that exists between the gardened square at the north side of the plot and the calle Padre Méndez.
La proposta prevede due edifici separati mediante una strada aperta con giardini, uno destinato a padiglione di accesso ed un altro agli Uffici Giudiziari e le Aule di Tribunale. L'architettura guarda se stessa, eludendo l’affaccio diretto verso le abitazioni lungo la strada Ronda. La sistemazione degli edifici si adatta alla differenza di quota del lotto (3 m) esistente tra la zona della piazza, situata a nord, con i giardini e la Via Padre Mendez.
We have attempted to humanize the complex surrounding it by gardens and creating a transparent building that reflects the typical characteristics of a law building.
Abbiamo voluto umanizzare l'insieme, circondandolo di giardini e creando un edificio trasparente‚ che appartenesse al carattere proprio di un edificio per la Giustizia.
